Welcome to Bad Gift Givers Anonymous, I am your president Amy Walker. For years I have dreaded holidays, weddings, birthdays and special occasions because I am the worst gift giver, EVER. For some reason my family and friends are never as excited to unwrap my presents as I think they should be.
Here is where I think I go wrong. When I purchase a gift I want it to be something the person is going to use. Not something that’s going to be placed in the back of the closet or worse, get re-gifted:-O. So I ask myself, “Self, what does XYZ person really need?” And there gift is what I end up with. For example, one of my best buds purchased a brand new car. So I thought it would only be fitting that I buy her a personal vehicle safety kit that consisted of a: flashlight, tire repair foam, tire pressure gauge, and disposable camera in the event of an accident. Needless to say I was surprised when she wasn’t jumping for joy at my thoughtfulness:-/. I know… I know… bad gift. A better gift would have been 5 new CD’s from her favorite artist.
Here is what I have learned over the years: 1. when purchasing a gift for someone it should be something that they want or have wanted, 2. if you wouldn’t want to get it as a present yourself on Christmas Day don’t give it to someone else and 3. purchase something for them that they could personally enjoy and or bring them joy.
When all else fails cheat, listen to my family and friends throughout the year as they mention what they would like. Make a list and if they don’t buy it by Christmas then that may be a good gift idea for you to purchase.
If you’re a bad gift giver like me, take my foolish advice and go with a Visa or MasterCard Gift Card. And remember good hard cash will never go out of season. As always leave a comment with your foolish advice on how NOT to be a bad gift giver and your great gift ideas for the season.
