My son could be the next #Trayvon Martin

Trayvon Martin Protest - Sanford

My heart is beating but when I watch the news it slows
I’m smiling at my 7 yr old son but when I look at him… I’m not seeing him, I see the struggle
I smile with my eyes but tears escape from them and water him with sorrow

I birth him into a nation that hates him for living
I signed his death certificate and forfeited his birth certificate the day I conceived him
My son could be the next #Trayvon Martin simply because his skin is kissed by the sun
and he is the son from a long lineage of births… into destruction

When will the killing of black boys and men stop? My heart has already failed me. And stopped!

RIP Trayvon Martin

Mitt Romney Wins Florida

English: Governor Mitt Romney of MA

If you follow my blog then you know that this year, election 2012, I vowed to first look at the issues that affect me and my community before I align myself with a political party. While, I’m not ready to declare myself a Liberal or Undecided I can say I am not happy with the political atmosphere. I know too many college graduates under 30 years old with great talent and skill that are unemployed or underemployed. I know too many individuals that are suffering physically and can’t receive any or sufficient medical care. I also worry that when my son reaches college age (8 years to go) he will have to attend a collegiate institution aboard and seek employment outside the USA to be afforded the best opportunities.

I’m listening to Mitt Romney Florida win speech and I just don’t buy it. I hear things like “I know how to create and build a successful business…” “I will make the United States look great again…” “I will create an environment that entrepreneurs can flourish in…” I need a President that is going to take action, not listen to the 1% of wealth that seems to be leading this nation, but rather the 99% of those actually sustaining it. I know this is too much to ask.

#takemyfoolishadvice If you are eligible to vote this election year then you owe it to this nation to stay abreast to what the issues are that you may select a candidate that will rectify our wrongs to create a better tomorrow and future. I will continue to stay tune.

My Son Was Introduced to Martin Luther King Jr.

My son came home from school on Friday and he says to me,
“Mommy there was a man called Martin Luther King Jr. Do you know of him? Well today in school we watched a movie about his life. When he was younger black kids and white kids had to use different water fountains and bathrooms. He really wanted to change the way people acted. They shot and killed him mommy, but if it wasn’t for him things would probably be the same.”

I asked him if the movie mad him sad because in his retelling he was rather somber. He said, “No” and stared off in the distance. I on the other hand was sad for a few reasons. My son is growing up in this world, full of sins of all kinds, racism included. I wasn’t ready for him to know how badly this world had treated blacks and how they still do sometimes. I wasn’t ready for him to start viewing the world in black and white. I loved the view he had in color. I was also disappointed that he had to get this experience at school and not at home. I felt that this information should have come from me. To be honest I didn’t think that this subject, racism, would have been presented to first graders. I certainly don’t remember this sort of lesson when I was in 1st grade but I understand a lot has changed, which is good.

I reside in a predominately white town. My son is the only black male in his class of 24 students.  Now that he is more aware of the history of African Americans and Americans, the lessons will begin. It is our job as parents to teach our children where they come from, as harsh as thay may be at times.

Don’t let the hurt of yesterday erase the rich journey that lead to better tomorrows. #takemyfoolishadvice

Book Review #2: Rediscovering Black Conservatism

As I mentioned in past postings, it is my desire to be more informed of the political climate. Especially since it seems to be heating up more and more every day. Election 2012 is here and in just 10 short months from now we will be casting our vote for President of the United States. Personally I believe that we are not divided by Democrats and Republicans alone, we are separated by money. It’s the same old battle of the “have’s” and the “have’s not”.

To kick off my reading selection this year is “Rediscovering Black Conservatism” by Lee H. Walker. I have had this book on my shelf for a while now. I thought it might be an interesting read and appropriate for this year. It’s a short 128 pages but I imagine that with all the facts to cross reference, it may take me longer than average to complete. I will post a review on it once I’m done. What’s on your book shelf? Anything interesting? Please share below.

The less informed we are the poorer decisions we make for our families. Every opinion counts. Be a part of the conversation. #takemyfoolishadvice
