2011 Reflection

There’s a lot of exciting things that I will remember about 2011. One of those things is the decision to start my second business venture, “Take My Foolish Advice”. I was in a creative slump and when I thought of the idea it got my juices following again. I’m really excited to see what the future holds for this venture and I hope you guys come along for the ride.

2011 also brought about some great music. I am the biggest Mary J Blige fan and I really love that she did a My Life II album. I adore Jill Scott’s The Light of the Sun album, I really like that she took us to that let’s just have some good ole fashion clean fun and let loose. I’m a Neo Soul head, can you tell? Marsha Ambrosius is just my speed; I like what she has out right now as well.

Fashion was big for me this year. I’m an 80’s baby and I loved that platform shoes, tights, and silk shirts with funky prints made a comeback in a big way this year. Did I mention cross over bags, big hair, and shoulder pads in everything. LOL I’ve been rocking them all. I’ve also been trying to discover/define my fashion style so it’s great that I can have this rediscovery moment during a repeat of my favorite decade.

As you all know this year also marks the year that I officially go on a quest to discover my God given purpose on Earth. So far my journey has lead me to “Take My Foolish Advice” and I’m pray fully waiting to see what’s next. I will certainly keep you guys posted.

Going into 2012 I have a few goal that I want to accomplish; I would like to share a few with you.

1. More reading, I love to read and my personal library is packed with a lot of great literature to explore. My weekends are already jammed pack so I need to train myself to read a little every day. Normally when I get a book I love, I get so caught up and I go missing for the whole weekend and nothing gets accomplished.

2. Stay in tune with the political climate. My political radar has been more sensitive since the run and election of President Barack Obama. 2012 is an election year and I want to get a better grasp of politics and explore different political views so I can make my own informed decision. I don’t want CNN to be my only resource for the facts.

3. I want to take a real vacation and explore this beautiful place call Earth. Any time the family flies somewhere or takes a cruise I am ALWAYS the one that stays home. I would tell you why but I’m afraid to be judged. Well next year, I’m hitting the Virgin Islands for a little get-a-way with family and friends.

4. I have decided that I will no longer fear my fullest potential. The sky is the limit. Take my foolish advice; you have to have a plan. Without one is to travel with no destination or means of transportation in mind.

What is your best moment of 2011? What are your goals for 2012? Share below.

What to Wear for a New Year’s Eve Party

The goal next year is not to purchase any clothing at retail cost. Instead I will only be revamping items currently in my wardrobe and thrifing for new ones. I am so not the trendy dresser plus I’m still discovering/defining my fashion style. Need I mention we are still struggling to get out of one of the worse economic recessions and being frugal is actually a method of survival.

My Little Black Skirt DIY Project

Sooo… what am I planning to do you may ask? I plan to revamp this beautiful black skirt that has been in my closet for a few years and “make it work” (in my Tim Gunn voice). My style inspiration is Bee, author of the Pacific-Atlantic blog. I think this look is clean, chic and glitzy enough for a New Year’s party. I’ll post pics of my final recreated outfit to get your feedback. Wish me luck!

Do you have plans for New Year’s, what will you be wearing? Take my foolish advice and start in your closet first and if you get stuck ask a friend to select an outfit for you. They may pair something together that you may have not considered. Good luck dolls.

P.S Here is the finished outfit. Enjoy!

I Purchased Monopoly for My Son

Monopoly (game)

This recession is not letting it up and planned spending and smart budgeting has been essential for this single mother of 1. For Christmas this year I decided to purchase Monopoly for my son. Normally I’m not the “toy purchasing mom” but I thought this would be a good way to teach him about investing and purchasing power. Not to worry, I am from a large family and they enjoy showering my son with Wii games, scooters, cars, instruments and the like. Besides, who doesn’t love Monopoly? It was my favorite game as a kid.

I wish more minority families would see financial freedom as a viable possibility through financial planning and discipline. Read the rest of this entry

Your job may be to maintain or sustain someone’s walk with/to Christ

As I was painting one of the bedrooms today I was in mediation with the Lord. I have been on an endless quest to discover my God given purpose on heart. I believe that I am in a season of preparation. Preparation for what you may ask? I have no idea :-) but I am waiting patient to discover it all. Currently I am in a season of prayer and devotional, more detail about this season will come later, and what promoted this season is of course as I mentioned earlier a quest to discover my purpose AND a story a friend told me. A friend of mine mentioned that he went home to visit his mother for Thanksgiving and while at the supermarket he ran into his old boss. Old like a boss from 15 years ago. The boss was pleased to see him and also told him that it was because of him while he decided to go to church and be baptized. His boss also mentioned that his mother had been praying for him to return to church for years and to no avail. How amazing! 15 years ago my friend had just graduated from high school and his boss was in his 40′s. God used this child to reclaim a lost soul. click here to cont. reading

What is your God Given Purpose?

For years I have struggled with trying to determine what my God given purpose is on this Earth. I have been attached to the notion that I am meant to do something great, magnificent, and downright HUGE with my life. I do believe that my life and the experiences in it are portions of this master plan I have named “it”. It pains me that at 29-years-old I still don’t know what “it” is. I have prayed, fasted, studied, read supplemental books, journal and still to no avail.  I have also tried taking different assessments to determine what my strengths, weaknesses, passions, and goals are, still nothing.

I have a few ideas on what to do next to uncover what “it” is. After completing these various tasks keep reading!

all BAD gift givers please report here!

 Christmas tree

Welcome to Bad Gift Givers Anonymous, I am your president Amy Walker. For years I have dreaded holidays, weddings, birthdays and special occasions because I am the worst gift giver, EVER. For some reason my family and friends are never as excited to unwrap my presents as I think they should be.

Here is where I think I go wrong. When I purchase a gift I want it to be something the person is going to use. Not something that’s going to be placed in the back of the closet or worse, get re-gifted:-O. So I ask myself, “Self, what does XYZ person really need?” And there gift is what I end up with. For example, one of my best buds purchased a brand new car. keep reading!

Christmas is coming folks

Christmas 2011 will be here before we know it. It’s time to be nice to everybody. I am normally a cheery person throughout the year anyway; quick to say good morning to strangers on my daily jog and smile at elderly people. This year I would like to take my holiday cheer to another level, I’m just unsure of what that next level is right now :-/. I was thinking some family caroling would be fun, but were not a family of singers. We’re walkers… get it Walker’s. LOL. No really singing is not our forte but we can definitely go on America’s Best Dance Crew and WIN that sucka! BAM! We’re Jamaican’s that hail from Brooklyn, New York baby. We can tear it up.

Traditionally a Walker family Christmas consists of keep reading!

Be Safe: Women Living Alone

Finally you are on your own, no parents and no roommate. You are completely on your own, making your own rules. You, darling, have just signed the lease to your very own apartment or better yet you have just purchased your first home. Congratulations! This is a rite of passage for millions of young women across the globe. There is so much you have already taken into consideration before you took this big step: mortgage/rent cost, location, paint colors, square footage, layout, and the list goes on. While this is an extremely exciting time in your life there is one important thing that I want you to also consider, your safety. Please understand that even though you are living on your own there will be countless times that people, male and female, will access your space. Perfect example would be the maintainance or repair men from the leasing office or someone who you’ve hired to do work in your home.

Single women or women living on their own can appear to be a prime targets for keep reading!

A Happy Birthday On a Budget

God's Gift

Today, December 1st, marks the day of my son’s birth. Sigh. Tear. It also means “mommy has to pull off DABOMB.COM birthday party”. Honey, let’s face the facts we are in a recession. Most of us just finished spending money on Thanksgiving festivities and Christmas and New Years are knocking at our door. Did I mention the current financial obligations to mortgage co., car note, car insurance, gas, food, and the list goes on. I feel the agony just like any other parent that has a child with a birthdate in December. It’s hard to function much less celebrate when funds are already stretch thin. Rest assured, I also have a sure-fire plan to throw a great birthday party under $25 bucks. keep reading!
